I would say that both renderers can produce the same picture, but redshift can go above and beyond octane‘s possibilities.Īlso, I‘m not sure why you would think that octane’s SSS is better looking than Redshifts, when it is one of it‘s greatest weaknesses imo. If your scenes are bigger and more complex, like interiors, exteriors, volumetric and various VFX effects and you want to keep the rendertimes low, redshift is the better choice. If your projects are smaller scenes, like product visualizations, or mainly stills, octane can mean less work to get it done. While it‘s true that redshift doesn‘t look as good as octane right from the start, it has the possibility to look as good and even better with much smaller rendertimes and much more possibilities - but that means more work. When my projects became bigger and more complex, Octane showed it‘s crashiness and limitations and it was kind of a natural evolution for me to jump over to Redshift. It has also many more tutorials in combination with c4d, which is great for beginners. It‘s true that octane is easier and more fun to use. I switched from several years with Octane to Redshift ca. If it takes much less time to set up then the extra render time could be a fair trade-off. Graphics Card (GPU) based render engines such as Redshift, Octane, or VRAY have matured quite a bit and are overtaking CPU-based Render-Engines both in. I also heard that Octane's SSS is much better.Īnyway, if this is all true then I might make the switch after experiencing long hours on so many projects setting up the materials, lights and render settings. Does this mean that a sun/sky object with portal lights will light up a room more realistically? I also heard that Octane's lighting is more "real-world" according to Andrey Lebrov but I'm not sure exactly what he means by that. Octane is a slower renderer but you can achieve amazing results faster and it's very crashy when you work with heavy scenes (something I did experience before I got Redshift). Plus it can handle more heavy and complex projects. So my understanding without knowing Octane very well is that Redshift renders faster but it takes longer to achieve the results you want because of the complexity of the settings. But then last year in a podcast he said that he went back to Octane because of the ease of use and ability to get good results faster, and that he only used RS for certain scenarios such as heavier scenes or the need to render out an animation faster. The reason I chose RS is based on Chad Ashly's article in motionographer a few years back where he compared the top engines and he seemed to favor Redshift. I didn't renew my Redshift license this month because I'm considering switching to Octane. Sorry if there are so many of these posts but I was just curious about the differences now that we're in 2022 and that both engines have matured quite a bit since I first got into GPU rendering.
